Browser Settings

The Illinois Traction Society web site is designed to work with the most popular web browsers as of June 2004.  This section describes the preferred settings for each of the supported browsers to ensure the most appropriate viewing of Illinois Traction Society web pages.

Since this is a graphically intensive web site, it is best that your system be set at 256 colors or better so you can experience the full range of colors used on the web site.  However, all graphic elements have been designed to display alternative text labels that can be useful to computer systems that support less than 256 colors or have no graphic display capabilities.  In addition, the Illinois Traction Society web site is designed for a screen resolution of 800 X 600 pixels or greater.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and later
This browser should work well with the Illinois Traction Society web site as is.  Just make sure that you use the "Medium" size font through the "Text Size" menu item that is located under the "View" menu choice.  Otherwise, the type sizes on the site will appear much larger or smaller then they are intended.  Also, it is best that Javascript support is enabled.  This is located on the "Advanced" tab of the "Internet Options" dialog box of the "Tools" menu choice.  Just scroll down about half way and check the box to enable Java.

Netscape Communicator 7.1 and later
This browser works better if it is set to display the web site's default colors.  Just make sure that you use the "100%" size option through the "Text Zoom" menu item that is located under the "View" menu choice.  Also, it is best that Javascript support is enabled.  To access the browser's preferences, click the Edit menu and then choose the Preferences option.  From the Preferences dialog box, click on Appearance, then Colors, and check the option to "Always use the colors and background specified by the web page" to ensure that the web site's colors are displayed.  From the Preferences dialog box, click on Advanced, then Scripts & Plugins, and check the option to "Enable JavaScript for Navigator" to enable Java and Javascript support.

Opera 7.51 and later
This browser should work well with the Illinois Traction Society web site as is.  Just make sure that you use the "100%" size option through the "Zoom" menu item that is located under the "View" menu choice.  Otherwise, the type sizes on the site will appear much larger or smaller then they are intended although this may be used to advantage.  Also, it is best that Javascript support is enabled.  This is accessible through the "Quick Preferences" menu item that is located under the "Tools" menu choice.  Just check the boxes to enable Java and Javascript.

Site Navigation

This section shows how the navigation menu is used on the Illinois Traction Society site to create a uniform browsing experience.

The Navigation Menu
The navigation menu is in a separate frame and has links to all of the web site's major sections and pages.  This allows the user to access web pages directly from anywhere on the site rather than having to return to the Home page.

The use the navigation menu, simply place your cursor over the word or words that describe which section or page you'd like to see.  Click once with your mouse button (the left button, if you're using a PC) and you will be taken to your selected page.  Click on another word in the navigation menu, and you can move elsewhere on the site.

The Back Link
The back link is located at the bottom of almost every page.  When you need to browse to the "logically" previous page from the one you are on, use the Back Link.  It is different than your browser's back button since it links to the logically previous page in relation to the page the user is on.

The Home Link
The Home link is located at the bottom of almost every page.  Clicking on the Home Link will take you directly to the Illinois Traction Society Home page.  This is particularly useful if you've come to a page from outside of the web site's navigation menu.

Printing Web Pages

Since the Illinois Traction Society web site takes advantage of HTML frames, you may experience unexpected results when printing. For example, you attempt to print the entire page or the right side content of the page and only the navigation menu is printed. There are a couple of solutions available. First, click once within the frame area that you would like to print. Then, select Print from the File menu option and print as you wish. When using a PC or Mac, you may also right click once in the frame area you'd like to print and select Print from the pop-up menu.

If you are still experiencing unexpected results, you should check the options available through the Print dialog form. This will vary depending on the browser and printer that is available. But, there should be a Print Frames option group somewhere within the Printer dialog form that typically offers three options. Ordinarily, you'll want to select the option to print "Only the selected frame". This choice should ensure that you'll be able to print the entire content of the selected frame.
