Illinois Railway Museum

Success!

The weather cooperated beautifully, and Illinois Railway Museum was able to run a train of Illinois Terminal orange cars in the Trolley Pageant on July 4th.  Illinois Terminal Class B, #1565, along with business car #233 and open-platform observation car #234 were prominently featured in the trolley pageant along with 33 other pieces of electric equipment.  None of the orange cars has operated for the public in at least twelve years, so this was a very special event.  Electric Car Department personnel worked many unsung hours to inspect and lubricate #233 and #234 so they and 1565 could participate in the pageant.    For the latest information on schedules and admission rates, check the calendar on the home page of Illinois Railway Museum.

Thanks again to Frank Hicks for alerting us to this very special event!

Several individuals were able to attend and film the Trolley Pageant.  And, they have all graciously allowed us to share their images.  These images are, of course, copyrighted by each individual and are available for your individual, non-commercial use and enjoyment.  If you wish, please feel free to contact them for further use or information.

And, from IT Society member and IRM volunteer, Bob Kutella, comes this great news!  Dave Mewhinney has agreed to produce a DVD of this program, about 20 minutes long, as a fundraiser for trolley restorations, and as a convenience for those not having the time or equipment to download and burn a disk.  IRM's Electric Car Department is asking a free will donation of $10 minumun to cover direct expenses of production, shipping and handling.  A real bargain, and they would encourage any of you to add a little something extra to support the Museum programs making this event possible.

Donations for a DVD of the IRM July 4 Trolley Parade should be mailed to:

Illinois Railway Museum
Box 427
Union IL 60180

Your check should be marked July 4 Video on the memo line and a note should be included making this clear.  Also, please be certain to include your return name and mailing address!

After direct expenses are covered, any remaining funds will be set aside for use by the Electric Car Department at IRM.  This might include restoration tasks on our collection, maintenance and repair of operating cars, and repairs to the parade cars.  IRM is not able to consider these as a restricted donation to a single piece of equipment as the total returns will be modest and bookkeeping would be a nightmare.  However, IRM always welcomes any generous support and any separate donation to a favorite piece of equipment can be marked as restricted and it will be held in a separate account for use ONLY on that equipment.

And, just to note, this is one of those things that has taken on a life of its own, vs the simple idea they had to furnish a video to one fellow who could not attend the trolley parade. So, while they hope the turn-around will be fast, please allow them about 4 weeks for delivery - the copies will be made to order and there are a lot of part time volunteers in the "production chain".

If you have any questions, please feel free to email Bob Kutella for assistance.  Thanks Bob and Dave!

Dave also made the following series of still images for everyone to enjoy!  Click on the image or the link to display the full size image.
